The Texas Longhorns Football Team Faces NCAA Violations for Gambling
The Texas Longhorns, a prominent US football team, has recently come under scrutiny after five of its members were found to have violated the NCAA’s rules. Reports from the Austin American-Statesman revealed that the preferred platform for these individuals was PrizePicks, a popular operator in the American daily fantasy sports market.
It is essential to note that individuals closely linked to a sport, including athletes, coaches, and support staff, are prohibited from participating in gambling activities or engaging in daily fantasy sports contests due to concerns about integrity. The access to insider information that these individuals possess could potentially provide them with an unfair advantage in such competitions. Gambling Addiction Treatment for Athlete
Of the two athletes involved in the violation, one was compelled to donate their winnings to charity, while the other, who had spent a significant portion of the total amount, decided to leave the team and seek treatment for problem gambling, having spent $9,600 on PrizePicks.
Although the identities of these two players have not been officially disclosed, it has been revealed that the remaining three individuals included a student assistant who gambled on their own team, exacerbating the severity of the violation. Consequently, the assistant has been relieved of their position.
Widespread Issue in NCAA
Regrettably, the Texas Longhorns are not an isolated case when it comes to gambling-related violations. In the year 2024 alone, the NCAA received approximately 100 self-reported violations of similar nature.
Earlier this year, Fresno State basketball players, Jalen Weaver and Zaon Collins, along with college athlete Mykell Robinson, faced suspensions due to suspected betting infractions. Similarly, Hysier Miller, a player from the Virginia Tech Hokies men’s basketball team, was dismissed for engaging in gambling activities that compromised the integrity of the sport.
