New Jersey Lawmakers Push for Miss America Pageant’s Return to Atlantic City Roots
New Jersey lawmakers are advocating for the iconic Miss America Pageant to return to its origins in Atlantic City. Despite recent relocations to places like Orlando, Florida, legislators are determined to bring the pageant back to the seaside city where it all began in 1921.
The Bill Under Review
The bill, set to be reviewed on Thursday, highlights the deep historical ties between Miss America and Atlantic City. Copies of the resolution, introduced on October 21, 2024, will be sent to the CEO of the Miss America Organization and the reigning Miss America, Abbie Stockard of Alabama, who was crowned on January 5 this year.
The resolution emphasizes, “The long and storied history of the Miss America Pageant has been inextricably tied to its origins and long-standing relationship with Atlantic City.”
A Boost for Tourism and Tradition
Lawmakers believe that bringing the pageant back to Atlantic City will not only boost tourism but also extend the summer season and revive an iconic piece of Americana. The roots of Miss America trace back to the Inter-City Beauty Contest in Atlantic City almost a century ago, evolving into a national competition over the years.
In 1937, Bette Cooper from New Jersey was crowned Miss America, further deepening the connection between the pageant and the local community.
An Empowering Tradition
Beyond its glamour, Miss America has been a symbol of empowerment and philanthropy. Since 1945, the organization has awarded over $150 million in scholarships, making it the largest scholarship program for women globally. The pageant also embraced a socially conscious role by allowing contestants to champion causes close to their hearts.
Despite its historical ties to Atlantic City, the pageant has moved away from its birthplace in recent years. The proposed resolution aims to see the pageant return to Atlantic City in 2025 and stay there for years to come.
New Jersey’s Bid to Restore Tradition
As the state’s 221st Legislature discusses the issue, New Jersey is eager to persuade the Miss America Organization to bring the pageant back to Atlantic City, honoring its history and revitalizing the city’s cultural and economic landscape.
Last year, Glenn Straub, a former casino owner in Atlantic City, filed a lawsuit claiming ownership of Miss America’s intellectual property. His company acquired the Miss America Organization in December 2022, adding another layer of complexity to the pageant’s future.
