Gambling Expansion Proposal Faces Opposition from Nearly 200 Lawmakers in Thailand
Ahead of the upcoming end of the parliamentary session in Thailand, approximately 200 lawmakers have come together to express their concerns about the proposals to legalize casino gambling and sports betting in the country. The opposition to these gambling initiatives continues to grow, with former lawmakers joining forces to urge the government, MPs, and political parties to reconsider their plans for gambling legalization.
Gambling Opponents Voice Various Concerns
Similar to other countries like the Philippines, Thailand is considering legalizing casinos and online gambling through potential bills. However, a group of 189 former lawmakers, which includes senators and former Senate speakers, recently released a statement calling for a halt to the proposed expansion of gambling.
The experienced lawmakers outlined several reasons why they believe the government, MPs, and political parties should not move forward with the legalization of casino gambling and online betting activities. They expressed concerns about the potential negative impacts of gambling, such as an increase in violent crimes like robberies and cross-border scams.
Additionally, the former senators raised alarms about the concentration of regulatory power in a single body if iGaming and casino gambling were to be regulated. They argued that this would lead to opaque regulation and give excessive power to a single entity.
Furthermore, the statement signed by the 189 former lawmakers highlighted worries about the supposed economic benefits of gambling activities. They contended that legalizing online gambling and casinos would not have a positive effect on the country’s GDP, as it would merely shift money between different groups without contributing to overall economic growth.
Former Senate Speakers Stand Against Gambling Expansion
The current government also faced criticism for the swift introduction of gambling policies without prior discussion. The former senators emphasized that gambling expansion was not part of the government’s agenda and the sudden introduction of legislation raised suspicions about the motives behind the move.
One of the major concerns raised in the statement was the potential societal risks associated with gambling. The former senators warned that the establishment of casinos could lead to a variety of social and socio-economic issues, even if only a small percentage of the proposed hotel and casino developments were used for gambling activities.
Among the 189 former senators who signed the statement opposing gambling expansion are three former Senate speakers: Pornpetch Wichitcholchai, Thiradej Meepian, and Manoonkrit Rupkhachorn.
As the end of the parliamentary session approaches next week on April 10, 2025, it remains uncertain whether there will be any progress towards the legalization of gambling in Thailand.
