Potential Sentencing
The sentencing for Cromwell is scheduled for November 5, with the possibility of up to 42 months in prison, a year of supervised release, and over $270,000 in restitution. This sum includes payments to the IRS and the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. Additionally, Cromwell will have to pay an $800 mandatory special assessment.
Troubles with the Casino Project
Cromwell’s legal troubles emerged in 2020 when he was indicted for allegedly accepting bribes from David DeQuattro, the head of a Rhode Island architectural firm involved in the casino project. The firm held a lucrative position as the “owner’s representative,” and Cromwell was accused of receiving personal benefits in exchange for ensuring the company’s contract with the tribe remained intact.
Despite apologizing in court and expressing remorse for his actions, Cromwell was convicted of bribery in 2022. However, the extortion charges were initially dismissed before being reinstated in September 2024 by the US Court of Appeals.
